World Sickle Cell Awareness Day
Today is celebrated as World Sickle Cell Awareness Day June 18, 2024.
This year’s theme is “Sickle Cell Matters: Whole Person, Whole Health- Know Your Status”.
WHAT IS SICKLE CELL DISEASE?
Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder where red blood cells become shaped like crescent moons (or sickles), leading to various health complications such as pain episodes, anemia, and organ damage.
WHO IS AT RISK OF GETTING THE DISEASE?
Sickle cell disease primarily affects individuals who inherit two sickle cell genes, one from each parent.
Family history of the disease and geographic factors also play a role in determining risk.
HOW IS IT TREATED?
Sickle cell disease is managed through pain relief during crises, antibiotics and vaccinations to prevent infections, blood transfusions as needed, bone marrow transplants for potential cure, and maintaining hydration and a healthy lifestyle.
Regular medical care is crucial for effective management.
