Our very own, Mrs. Linda Darnel Sutherland-Hines, Director of Nursing Services at the Port Maria Hospital, will be heading into Kingston tomorrow to receive the Governor General’s Achievement Award for her dedication and service in her nursing profession and social service in her parish of St. Mary. It is with an overwhelming amount of pride that her NERHA family congratulates her on this momentous honour. One of her colleagues proudly speaks of her saying, “she does a lot of work to uplift the staff of Port Maria Hospital and her community”.

Mrs. Sutherland-Hines has dedicated over 33 years (and counting) to the nursing profession. A past student of Wolmer’s High School, Mrs. Sutherland-Hines studied and received her qualifications as a Regional General Nurse at the University Hospital School of Nursing. In 1981, she furthered her qualifications as a Midwife from the Jubilee Hospital School of Midwifery. Being the consummate learner, she did not stop there, but later on successfully completed a Master of Public Educator Degree at the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, at The University of the West Indies.

One cannot keep up with the countless activities Mrs. Sutherland-Hines is involved with. She is not only a dedicated and beloved member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church; she is also a Deacon and Lay Preacher. She has served as Moderator for The St. Mary Baptist Association. She has chaired the Board of the HEART Trust/NTA in St. Mary, served as President of the PTA for Port Maria Primary and High Schools, served as President of the Cuban Student Association, and she currently chairs the Board of the Emmanuel Basic School. Mrs. Sutherland-Hines has also found time to be a judge for the Secondary School Debate, and the JCDC Festival Queen shows.

Mrs. Sutherland-Hines is not only a Director, a Deacon, a Lay Preacher and an active community member; add Philanthropist to her name. “Giving back” is her mission statement. “She assists needy students with school fees, uniforms and books”.

North East Regional Health Authority is extremely proud of our very own honoree of the Governor General’s Achievement Award of Excellence for 2010, Mrs. Linda Darnel Sutherland-Hines.

We salute you!
